Tips for Recycling Plastic Bottles

Articles & Blogs Category

In Indonesia, recycling is still very minimal, considering that waste sorting and management still uses conventional methods, namely burning and landfilling in Final Processing Sites (TPA). In fact, in public spaces it is still difficult for people to distinguish between organic, inorganic and toxic waste. Instead of recycling plastic properly, raising awareness of sorting waste and disposing of waste according to its place is still a big challenge. To increase this awareness, knowledge about the types of plastic and how to treat it is also important.

The following are seven types of plastic codes that make it easy to identify before recycling plastic:

1.PET or Polyethylene

This type of plastic is most commonly found in society, such as drinking water bottles and other disposable bottles. Launching from the book Sustaination, plastic recycling is categorized as easy, namely by crushing it into pieces and recycling it into polyester cloth, dacron filled with dolls/pillows, and carpets.

2. HDPE or High-density Polyethylene

HPDE plastic recycling is most often done because the recycling process is simple and has economic value. Usually this type of plastic is used as a container for detergent, shampoo, soap, and other types of containers that are thick enough.

3. PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride

This type of plastic recycling is categorized as difficult because it contains chemicals that can melt. Some types of PVC can indeed be reused, but it is not recommended if they come into contact with food. This type of plastic is commonly used as plastic wrap, cables, pipes to children's toys.

4. LDPE or Low-density Polyethylene

This type of plastic is very easy to find, but very difficult to recycle. LDPE is commonly used as a plastic bag. This is why it is important to refuse single-use plastic bags when shopping, and it is advisable to bring reusable shopping bags.

5. PP or Polypropylene

Plastic recycling is categorized as medium-difficult, because it has heat resistance, can block moisture and oil. PP is often used as food packaging, such as instant noodles, cereals and others.

6. PS or Polystyrene

This plastic is classified as difficult to recycle because it can emit a dangerous carcinogen in the form of styrene. This type of plastic is commonly used to make plastic forks and spoons, Styrofoam, and egg holders.

7. O or Others

This type of plastic is categorized as difficult, even non-recyclable and dangerous if it comes into contact with food. This type of plastic is in the form of BPA, polycarbonate and LEXAN, chemicals that can trigger health problems. This is because the condition of dirty plastic will complicate the recycling process, so that the products resulting from plastic recycling are not optimal and may actually pollute the environment because they fail to be recycled.
